Celebrating Art Together
Art Block Art Block is a free annual event open to the public held every spring – usually in April. The open-air art festival fills the 800 block of New Bridge Street in downtown Jacksonville with color, sound and interactive activities the whole family can enjoy. The day’s highlights feature: friendly art competition, theatrical performances, dance, a variety of live bands, crafts for children, food trucks and much more. Onslow County residents and visitors enjoy roaming through artists’ and vendors’ tents.
Sunshine and Smiles
This year we were blessed with a beautiful day full of sunshine and smiles. As visitors enjoyed the sights and sounds on the street, children and adults alike were seen painting on the public “mural” display, creating sand art and exploring the many original art works on display and for sale. Art Block is also the culmination of a 3-day “Plein Air Paint-Out” competition. Artists paint outdoors in the downtown area for three days. Their work is judged and cash awards are presented during the Art Block Festivities in the afternoon. This year, Brenda Behr – renowned North Carolina artists – judged the competition. Immediately following the presentation of awards, a “wet paint” sale was held in the middle of the street and over 20 paintings were sold.
Attendance was strong throughout the festival hours from 10-4. This was especially noticed by the food trucks on site who had to restock twice in the afternoon. Plan to visit the 3rd Annual Art Block in April 2017. It’s sure to be all-smiles again next year!
